Discover Book: Skin Deep by Raine Fielder
After a sudden move to a quiet island, Kia uncovers a mysterious tattoo, an old journal, and something darker beneath the surface. Skin Deep blends grief, love, and quiet magic into an atmospheric story where the past refuses to stay buried.
Some stories don’t announce themselves loudly. They unfold slowly, through atmosphere, emotion, and the quiet sense that something isn’t quite as it seems.
Skin Deep by Raine Fielder belongs to that space.
When Kia Matthews loses her mother, her world shifts in ways she cannot yet understand. Uprooted from Seattle and moved to the small New England island of Buccaneer Bay, she finds herself navigating grief, displacement, and the unfamiliar rhythm of a place that seems to hold more secrets than it reveals.
What begins as a difficult transition soon takes an unexpected turn.
A mysterious tattoo.
A two-hundred-year-old journal.
And a presence of something darker, something woven into the fabric of the island itself.
As Kia starts to piece together what she’s found, the story moves beyond the visible. It becomes not just about what is happening, but what lingers across time, across memory, across love that refuses to disappear.
Blending elements of magical realism with an emotional undercurrent of loss and connection, Skin Deep is less about spectacle and more about feeling. It invites the reader into a world where the extraordinary exists quietly alongside the everyday, where meaning reveals itself gradually rather than all at once.
As one editorial review describes it:
“A gentle, atmospheric work of magical realism… built through mood, emotion, and the quiet strangeness of everyday life.”
For readers drawn to stories that explore what lies beneath the surface, of places, of relationships, of the self, Skin Deep offers a subtle, immersive experience.
