Exploring Horror, Heart, and Unflinching Truth in The Silent Offering
Author Bio
D Lovell is a multi-genre author who writes fiction that refuses to stay in its lane: stories driven by flawed characters, impossible situations that somehow make perfect sense, and emotional truths that linger. Her work spans contemporary, speculative, and dark fiction, united by a fascination with identity, belonging, self-worth, and survival against systems designed to break you. She believes the best stories emerge when you stop following rules and start following emotional truth. With sharp dialogue, layered tension, and an occasional dose of humor or heat, she creates worlds where the impossible feels inevitable, and the human cost matters. D Lovell lives in Indianapolis with her Great Dane, Lennox, and an ever-expanding collection of drafts and spreadsheets.
Writing Journey & Inspiration
The Silent Offering came from a deeply personal place. As a Black woman, D Lovell has long witnessed the inequities in how children of color are treated: overlooked, dismissed, or denied the urgency that white children receive when they go missing. A real incident of a white woman berating a five-year-old autistic child while receiving sympathy and rewards inspired the core metaphor of the Offering Tree: a town and a system that thrive on the suffering of marginalized children.
Her writing journey began five years ago. Though she has always loved books, journaling, and songwriting, her career and adult responsibilities took precedence. Losing her six-figure job in June 2024 became a turning point. Amid grief, confusion, and depression, she returned to writing with renewed urgency. Six chapters into The Silent Offering, the passing of her grandmother propelled her to write her debut novella, The Life I Didn’t Live, in a matter of months. These experiences shaped her voice: unflinching, emotionally honest, and committed to telling stories that matter.
Book: The Silent Offering
Genre: Supernatural Horror
For decades, children of color have gone missing in Haven Ridge.
Jeffrey Dunham hasn’t set foot in his hometown since his sister vanished twenty-seven years ago, until a child is found dead by the same river, his throat cut, blood drained, a spiral carved into his skin. The family demands answers.
Now a seasoned investigative journalist, Jeffrey returns to uncover the truth. What he finds is a chilling pattern buried beneath scripture, masked as tradition, and rooted, literally, in the Offering Tree. An ancient hunger has fed on Haven Ridge for generations, maybe even longer than the town has existed.
With help from a weary deputy and a reclusive historian, Jeffrey races to expose the town’s darkest secret. But some legacies won’t go quietly. Some offerings come back. And according to a forgotten ledger beneath the church, his sister Lila is still marked as pending.
The Silent Offering fuses folk horror with social reckoning, a story where small-town silence is a curse, complicity runs deep, and justice may demand blood.
Excerpt
The baby hadn’t even cried yet when they slit his throat. Naomi didn’t see the blade move. One second, her baby was wrapped in lambskin and oil, looking up at the ceiling. Next, the blood came—slow at first, then steady, flowing over her hands as she held him, tilted like a chalice.
…
They poured his blood into the roots beneath the Offering Tree. Naomi watched from the doorway, her body too heavy to stand, her soul too shattered to cry. The townspeople were already gathered—circling the trunk with their heads bowed, each with spirals drawn across their foreheads. It meant devotion. It meant binding the soul to the tree. It meant silence.
