Writing Fear, Love, and Corruption in Romantic Suspense

Some stories begin with a carefully planned outline. Others begin with a quiet moment of reflection that unexpectedly opens the door to something bigger.

For E.N. Chanting, the journey into indie authorship began with a simple gift: a mother–daughter journal. While writing about the story of how she met her husband, she discovered that her life story was only the beginning. There were other stories waiting to be told, stories filled with danger, passion, mystery, and emotional stakes.

Without telling anyone, she began writing two novels at the same time: Haunted Hunting Camp and Force of Corruption. Within just a few weeks, the first drafts were complete. What followed was the next great adventure, learning how to self-publish.

With determination and curiosity, she stepped into the world of indie publishing, navigating research, trial and error, and what she humorously describes as “every mistake possible.” Yet persistence paid off. Both books eventually found their way onto Amazon, launching a writing journey that continues to grow.

Since that first leap into the unknown, E.N. Chanting has published nine books and contributed to multiple anthologies, several supporting charitable causes. Her work blends romance, suspense, and darker elements of horror, creating stories that explore attraction, danger, and the choices people make when pushed to their limits.

Her passion for storytelling is also shaped by personal resilience. Living with autoimmune illness sometimes makes writing and attending events challenging, but she continues to pursue the craft with determination. Whether writing from her desk or attending signings with the help of a wheelchair, storytelling remains a lifelong dream she refuses to abandon.

I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way,” she says, “but I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything.

“If I tell you that, I may have to kill you.”

Paige Patterson hopes her new love interest is joking, and she laughs.

Rhett Baker is mostly teasing, though he’s not quite ready to explain his chosen career just yet.

Their first date sparks instant chemistry and laughter, but after a whirlwind weekend together, Rhett disappears without explanation. Before Paige has time to process his absence, a childhood friend is arrested for a shocking crime.

Determined to prove her friend’s innocence, Paige begins digging for answers. The evidence tells one story, but the resistance she encounters from fellow officers suggests something deeper, and far more dangerous, is at play.

What she uncovers reaches the very heart of the department.

As Paige and Rhett find themselves pulled into a deadly battle against corruption and hidden power, their growing connection may become either their greatest strength or their greatest weakness.

When the truth finally surfaces, one question remains:

Which is stronger… the force of attraction, or the force of corruption?

Excerpt

As I pass near the chief’s office, I hear him laughing with a man who has a deep voice with a slight southern twang. It reminds me of Matthew McConaughey.
When I exit the ladies’ room, I catch a glimpse of a tall man with dark-blond hair and tan skin leaving the chief’s office. He's wearing jeans, a golf shirt, and scuffed cowboy boots. I can't see his face and find myself following him toward the lobby, watching the confident sway of his walk.
Damn, I want to bite it.
While I'm staring at his backside, I’m pondering my non-existent love life when I bump my elbow on the corner of the lobby counter.
Smack.
“Ow! Shit!”
I grab my arm as pain shoots down to my fingertips.
When I look up, I lock eyes with the most gorgeous blue eyes I've ever seen—dark cerulean, like the ocean. They sweep across my face slowly, almost like a touch.
My cheeks heat and I give him an embarrassed smile.
He smirks.
“Are you okay there, darlin’?”
“Oh, yeah. I’m fine. Happens all the time.”
He looks me up and down shamelessly before flashing a crooked grin.
“You may want to invest in some elbow pads if that’s the case.”
I giggle despite myself. I can’t stop staring at those eyes, that strong jaw, that effortless confidence.
And suddenly I realize I’ve been standing here staring far too long.
